Replacing a CO2 bottle

When should you use this?

Written by Bram Sol

Use this article when the CO2 bottle is empty or needs to be replaced.

Important

CO2 is odorless and operates under high pressure.
Always check for leaks after replacing the bottle.

Steps: replacing the CO2 bottle

1. Close the bottle completely

Close the main valve by turning it clockwise.

2. Release pressure from the system

  • Dispense beer

  • Or use the pressure relief valve

→ The pressure gauges should drop to 0

3. Remove the pressure regulator

Loosen the coupling nut with a wrench.

4. Check the sealing ring

  • Not cracked

  • Not flattened

→ Replace it if in doubt

5. Place the new bottle

Place it upright and in a stable position.

6. Mount the regulator

  • First tighten by hand

  • Then tighten firmly

  • Do not use Teflon tape

7. Open the bottle slowly

Expected pressure: ±50–60 bar

8. Set the operating pressure

Beer guideline: 0.6 – 0.8 bar

Leak check (mandatory)

  • Spray soapy water on the connection

  • Bubbles visible → leak

  • No bubbles → OK

Common mistakes

  • Opening the bottle too quickly

  • Not performing a leak check

  • Forgetting to check the sealing ring

Quick check

  • Pressure remains stable

  • No hissing sound

  • No bubbles at the coupling

→ The system is safe to use.
