Replacing a keg (tap system)

When should you use this?

Written by Bram Sol

Use this article when a keg is empty and needs to be replaced.

Important

Tap systems operate under pressure.
Never disconnect a coupling while the system is still pressurized.

Steps: disconnecting the empty keg

1. Close the tap

Make sure no beer is still flowing.

2. Close the CO2

Turn off the CO2 bottle.

3. Release the pressure

  • Briefly pull the pressure relief valve

  • Or dispense a small amount of beer

→ You will often hear a short hiss

4. Unlock the coupling

  • Push the handle slightly down

  • Then pull it up into the vertical position

5. Remove the coupling

Turn it a quarter turn counterclockwise and lift it up.

Connecting a new keg

  1. Place the new keg in a stable position

  2. Check that the correct keg has been selected

  3. Place the coupling straight onto the keg

  4. Lock it according to the coupling type

  5. Slowly open the CO2

  6. Dispense a test glass to remove air from the line

  7. Check for leaks

Common mistakes

  • Disconnecting the coupling while the system is still pressurized

  • Not checking the worn rubber seal

  • Not dispensing a test glass → air remains in the line

Quick check

  • Does beer flow without sputtering?

  • Is there no visible leakage?

  • Is the CO2 pressure stable?

→ Then everything is connected correctly.
